Hi Local Presidents and Legislative Contacts,

Highlights this week

  • SB166 was signed in to law by Governor Hassan (picture attached)
  • Positive retirement legislation in the Senate
  • Several major fires across the state

Legislation

  • SB 166: relative to critical incident stress management and crisis intervention services.
    • Was signed into law on Thursday at 3:45pm
    • President Lang, Secretary/Treasurer McQuillen, and former state rep and rt. L-789 member Mark Proulx were present at the signing.
    • This is an incredibly important step forward and a positive law for our members to be able to debrief critical stress incidents with their peers in confidence.
  • HB 124: relative to the determination of gainful occupation for a group II member receiving an accidental disability retirement allowance from the retirement system.
    • Passed the Senate on Thursday by a voice vote
    • Will head back to the House for concurrence due to a non-germane amendment dealing with the Director of the Dept of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.
    • We do not expect any problems with the House agreeing with changes made in the Senate
  • HB 342: relative to reporting of compensation paid to retired members of the retirement system.
    • Passed the Senate last week with no issues
    • The House concurred on Wednesday so it will head to the Governor’s desk

It took 24 firefighters about 45 minutes to gain control of the fire. Because of a "dead-end water main," which Poulin estimated was only 6 to 8 inches in diameter, fire crews used two ladder trucks in dousing the flames with water. Those hoses can spray a larger area than handheld hoses, Poulin explained National

When fire crews arrived, there was no smoke or fire showing and the building already had been evacuated, according to Deputy Fire Chief Brian Rhodes….Rhodes commended the staff for calling 911 promptly. "This quick notification helped Nashua Fire Rescue fully extinguish and overhaul the fire area, and prevented widespread damaged to the remainder of the building," he said.

One firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion and recovered at the scene. Firefighters were called to the six-unit complex at approximately 2:20 a.m. The fire was considered under control at 4:30 a.m. The fire caused heavy damage to the building. No cause has been determined as of 6 a.m. today.

Thousands of first-responders gathered in Houston on Wednesday for an emotional tribute to four firefighters killed in a deadly blaze last week.
